Breast Augmentation Information
Each year, there are hundreds of thousands of women who consider and have breast augmentation surgery that helps to increase self confidence, improve asymmetrical breasts, and reconstruct breasts. Reconstruction is normally done on breasts that are damaged by removal of a tumor or surgery. By far, the reason why women look into breast implants is for appearance; many are not happy with the way their breasts look and want to enhance them to look and feel better. The reason for this procedure is different for every woman. There are some women who want minor changes and others who are looking for something more drastic with size and shape being major considerations. Most women are not satisfied with the sagging, size, or the balance of their breasts.
Technology has definitely increased since 1962 when the first silicone implant was used. They are now much more natural looking and safer. The FDA released a 14-year old ban on the use of silicone implants on November 17, 2006 after years of research had been performed over their safety. To be considered for breast implants, a woman must be at least 18 years old, be in good health, breast-feeding or pregnant.
Steps Of Surgery
There are several different types and techniques of breast augmentation available for women, so each case and surgery will be different. What they all have in common is that each surgery is performed with general anesthesia, or in some rare cases with local anesthesia with some sedative. The surgery is performed as an inpatient procedure or in a hospital and lasts between 1 and 2 hours.
The steps of the surgery itself include: 1.) making the proper incision 2.) Positioning the implants in the right location 3.) Stitching up the incision made. The three variables in each surgery are the type of implant, the area of the incision and the implant placement. Implants that are used today have a silicone shell and filled with either silicone or saline.
Silicone implants were banned in 1992 until further research can be done on them. Silicone gel-filled implants may still used to replace silicone implants in those women who have already had them placed in or for the use of reconstruction. The three types of silicone gel-filled implants include single lumen (pre-filled), double lumen inflatable (with pre-filled inner lumen), and double lumen inflatable (with pre-filled outer lumen).
The three types of saline implants include single lumen (filled during procedure), single lumen adjustable (filled during operation that can later be adjusted), and an implant pre-filled with saline. All implants with silicone gel have a shape that is natural and also gives a natural appearance. This filling lowers and may eliminate risk of infection and complications. Implants filled with saline are either anatomical are round in shape. The anatomical give the breast a shape that is natural and a slope that falls toward the bottom of the breast.
Techniques And Recovery
The incision for the insertion of a breast implant can be made at four different locations: on the lower crease, at the areola, within the belly button or within the armpit. Different physicians performing the procedure usually prefer different techniques. It is important for the patient to discuss with the surgeon what option is preferred before the procedure.Silicone implants are made pre-filled and because of this they cannot be inserted within the armpit or belly button.
Breast implant placement is either sub-muscular or sub-glandular. If sub-muscular, placement can be complete or partial. When placed sub-glandular, the insertion of the implant is easier, faster and typically has a shorter period for recovery. The proper amount of recovery time is very important after breast augmentation procedures. By following instructions accurately and not doing certain activities, a shorter more comfortable recovery will be experienced.
Instructions normally include limited movement and lots of rest. Any activity that includes bending, lifting or straining needs to be avoided because these can increase pain and soreness as well as delay the healing process. After a breast augmentation procedure, a patient can typically go back to work after a week, given that the job does not require strenuous activities or lifting of heavy items.
